Message From CEO

md

Govind Ghimire

Chief Executive Officer

Sustainability is the foundation of how we define progress, manage risk, and create long-term value for Nepal. As a nation endowed with extraordinary natural resources and resilient communities, Nepal stands at a pivotal moment in its development journey. The priorities we set today in energy, infrastructure, finance, and inclusion will define our prosperity for generations.

Nepal’s rapid infrastructure and industrial development has fueled economic progress but also introduced environmental and social (E&S) challenges that threaten long-term sustainability. Lending activities further expose banks to E&S risks, including legal, credit, and reputational impacts. Additionally, Nepal’s geography and reliance on climate-sensitive sectors make it highly vulnerable to climate change.

Banks and financial institutions play a pivotal role in addressing these challenges by integrating environmental, social, and climatic considerations into lending decisions. At NMB Bank, we are committed to responsible banking—protecting the environment, people, and communities through E&S risk management. Effective E&S practices not only safeguard sustainability but also enhance financial performance and reputation for both the Bank and its clients. Our focus on renewable energy, hydropower, and partnership‑driven impact initiatives reflects this conviction.

Through renewable energy and energy‑efficiency financing, we are expanding access to clean, affordable energy—especially for underserved and last‑mile communities—while also supporting energy security, innovation, entrepreneurship, and green livelihoods. Our hydropower financing strengthens Nepal’s position as a regional clean‑energy exporter, contributing to decarbonization, foreign‑exchange earnings, and national energy security. At the same time, our Partnership & Impact Initiatives mobilize blended finance, development capital, and risk‑sharing instruments to deliver measurable outcomes aligned with Nepal’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs).

In compliance with Nepal Rastra Bank’s ESRM Guideline (2018) and aligned with our vision of responsible banking, NMB has implemented an Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS). This system assesses E&S risks and opportunities, ensures adherence to national regulations and international standards, and supports clients in mitigating identified risks. We aim to raise awareness of E&S compliance among clients and reduce risks associated with their operations. Our ESMS is further strengthened by continuous support from FMO, a key shareholder (13.69%) and AAA-rated Dutch development bank, along with other international development partners.

NMB is proud to serve as a trusted, DFI‑ready platform—combining strong governance, international standards, and proven execution capability. We are committed to enabling a just transition, accelerating Nepal’s pathway to net‑zero by 2045, and ensuring that growth is inclusive, climate‑resilient, and socially equitable.

I invite our customers, partners, investors, and development institutions to join us in this journey. Together, we can mobilize capital with purpose and build a cleaner, more inclusive, and more prosperous future for Nepal.

We appreciate your continued support as we work toward creating sustainable value for all stakeholders.

Renewable Energy Hydropower PartnershipAgriculture

Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency

Nepal’s transition toward a resilient, low‑carbon economy is anchored in a diversified and sustainable energy mix. At NMB Bank, we play an active role in accelerating this transition by providing tailored financial solutions across the renewable energy and energy‑efficiency spectrum. Our support spans solar energy, biogas, micro‑ and mini‑hydropower, clean cookstoves, solar dryers and pumps, improved water mills, electric mobility, and emerging green technologies.

Working closely with the Alternative Energy Promotion Centre (AEPC), NMB has been serving as the Handling Bank for the Central Renewable Energy Fund since 2018. Through this partnership, we help translate national renewable energy policies into practical, bankable solutions that benefit households, businesses, and communities—particularly in underserved and remote regions.

Our commitment goes beyond financing projects. A dedicated renewable energy financing team enables us to understand sector‑specific challenges and design value‑based banking solutions. These investments improve livelihoods, expand energy access, and directly contribute to Nepal’s Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Key Financing Areas:

  • Working capital financing for renewable energy vendors and EPC companies operating nationwide, including last‑mile markets.
  • Project financing for off‑grid micro/mini‑hydro and mini‑grid systems, enhancing rural electrification and productive energy use.
  • Credit facilities for microfinance institutions and cooperatives to extend clean energy access to low‑income households.
  • Project financing for renewable energy producers, including waste‑to‑energy, biomass pellet, and briquette industries.
  • Rooftop solar financing under both CAPEX and RESCO models.
  • Utility‑scale solar projects supplying power to Nepal Electricity Authority.
  • Electric mobility financing, including Safa Tempo and other electric vehicles.
  • Green home and green building loans.
  • Energy‑efficiency projects aligned with national and international standards.

NMB also leverages blended‑finance mechanisms, working with international development partners to bridge market gaps, mitigate risks, and crowd‑in private investment—helping build a self‑sufficient and energy‑secure Nepal.

Hydropower

Hydropower remains the backbone of Nepal’s clean energy future. With one of the highest per‑capita hydropower potentials globally, Nepal is now entering an era of seasonal energy surplus. Regional power trade with India and Bangladesh positions the country as a future exporter of clean electricity, strengthening foreign‑exchange reserves and energy security.

Achieving the national target of over 28,500 MW of installed capacity by 2035 will require unprecedented levels of investment. Government has estimated to require an investment of USD 46.50 billion that is well beyond current domestic financing capacity. NMB Bank is proud to be a leading financier in this journey, having committed financing to more than 1,000 MW of hydropower projects—primarily as lead arranger. We aim to allocate up to 18% of our total loan portfolio to the energy sector by 2030. Further, our H-GRIF platform is expected to encourage international investments and financing in the country.

NMB provides end‑to‑end financial solutions for hydropower projects of all scales, prioritizing environmentally responsible design, strong governance, and positive community impact. Our collaborative approach—working with developers, regulators, and development partners—helps ensure bankable projects and successful execution.

Through hydropower financing, NMB also supports decarbonization of transport, cooking, and industry, while generating employment, local revenue, and long‑term economic resilience.

  • Recognizing Environmental, Social, & Climate-related responsibility as one of the key components of our business strategies;
  • Meeting the expectations of the Nepal Rastra Bank Environmental & Social Risk Management Guideline, adhering to all relevant Nepalese E&S including climate-related legislation and regulations and the Environmental & Social terms and conditions agreed with International Partners in implementation of the IFC Performance Standards (PS) on Environmental and Social Sustainability;
  • Maintaining an up to date E&S Exclusion List and ensuring the Bank does not finance or limit our exposure to the extent allowed in any project / activity as per the Exclusion List;
  • Disclosing required information as per regulatory requirement and international best practice to ensure public accountability at the same time ensuring confidentiality of customers’ information;
  • Uphold highest standards of business integrity and good corporate governance;
  • Continuously enhancing the Bank’s ESMS in line with new developments in the E&S environment and international best practices.

Nepal’s ambition to achieve net‑zero emissions by 2045 and meet its SDG and NDC commitments requires strong private‑sector participation. NMB’s Partnership & Impact Initiatives mobilize development finance, blended capital, and innovative risk‑sharing mechanisms to deliver measurable social, environmental, and economic impact.

With built‑in risk‑mitigation tools such as first‑loss capital, partial guarantees, FX hedging, and standardized project agreements, H‑GRIF represents a transformational approach to clean‑energy financing in Nepal.

With proven expertise in renewable energy, inclusive finance, ESG leadership, and execution at scale, NMB Bank stands ready to partner with development partners and development finance institutions to accelerate Nepal’s green, just, and inclusive transition.

Agriculture

Ensuring that our financial support reaches all segments of society and aligning with our core values of prioritizing people, prosperity, and the planet, agriculture lending holds a crucial place among our priorities. Agriculture serves as the primary economic activity in our country, yet the lack of access to finance throughout the agricultural supply chain has hindered the sector's full potential in terms of production and benefits. To address this, we actively support the Government's initiative to increase financing in the agricultural sector and remain steadfast in providing direct and indirect assistance to the agricultural community.

Every year significant foreign reserves are depleted for agricultural products import. The bank has been supporting agriculture businesses – big and small to increase productivity through our financing. This is expected to contribute to food security in the country through a rise in production.

The bank supports climate-smart agriculture practices that are resilient and productive in climate change conditions. The financing is inclined to sustainable agriculture that promotes long-term environmental, economic, and social viability. The aim is to address the food security issue faced by the country.

Aside from directly financing agriculture-related businesses, we actively seek partnerships to provide non-financial expertise and knowledge, allowing us to design programs and processes that support small farms and farmers while also filling the financing gaps in the value chain.

In accordance with the mandatory provisions set by NRB and driven by our vision of value-based banking, NMB Bank has established a dedicated "AGRI DESK" to facilitate credit processes within the agriculture sector. This specialized department will handle the entire agriculture loan portfolio, overseeing its processing, monitoring, and supervision. Recognizing the immense potential in this sector and to comply with NRB's requirements, our strategic focus is to expand the Agricultural loan portfolio by capitalizing on market opportunities and offering a wider range of structured products and services for the long-term benefit of the bank.

Our customer-centric approach is ingrained at every level of our organization. Our dedicated and enthusiastic staff at branches across the country are well-equipped to understand your business needs and are eager to provide you with our class services.

NMB Bank eagerly awaits the opportunity to welcome you and your business at our service outlets.
